THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Penmaenuchaf Hall Hotel
Fourteen rooms, two floors, and a long lawn that runs out toward the Mawddach estuary with Cadair Idris standing behind it: Penmaenuchaf Hall is a stone-fronted Victorian house three kilometres outside Dolgellau, built on the site of a 16th-century farmhouse once called Cliffe House. Current owners Zoe and Neil Kedward took over in 2022 and have been restoring it room by room rather than gutting it for a rebrand, so the oak panelling and the odd creaking floorboard stay. The garden is the thing peers in this stretch of Snowdonia don't have: a Cadw-registered 19th-century terraced garden with a sunken ornamental section, lavender beds, a pond, and paths into the woodland below, plus a viewing lawn that looks straight down the valley. Inside, a curated library put together with a bookshop in nearby Machynlleth and a wood-panelled music room stocked with vinyl give the place somewhere to sit that isn't a hotel lounge. Afon Restaurant, run by head chef Dan Andree, works a seasonal, locally sourced menu for lunch and dinner, while Mynydd Bar covers coffee, a pre-dinner drink, or something from the bar menu at a slower pace. A spa and massage room, free parking, and free Wi-Fi cover the practical side; check-in is from 3pm, check-out by 11am, and extra beds run 60 GBP a night. Rooms go from a compact Standard up through a Deluxe with a balcony to a Suite, so the fit depends on what you're booking for. This suits a couple wanting a proper walk and a proper dinner rather than a spa menu to work through; anyone wanting a big pool or a lively bar scene should look elsewhere. Cadair Idris does most of the talking here, and the house lets it. Fourteen rooms above the Mawddach estuary, a Cadw-listed garden, and a kitchen run by Dan Andree at Afon Restaurant. Built from a 16th-century farmhouse and restored since 2022 by owners Zoe and Neil Kedward, it suits walkers and quiet diners more than nightlife seekers.

The gardens at Penmaenuchaf are registered with Cadw for their historic interest as a well-preserved nineteenth-century terraced garden. Guests can wander the sunken ornamental garden, sit among lavender beds, follow paths beyond the pond into woodland, or walk the long viewing lawn overlooking the Mawddach estuary and surrounding Eryri mountains, with daffodils carpeting the lawns each spring.
The number of extra beds depends on the room category. You must take a look at the information about the size of the selected room.
