THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Great Fosters Hotel
Great Fosters sits behind a historic walled garden in Egham, its grounds holding a 14th century Tithe Barn and a Saxon moat where outdoor ceremonies still take place on the lawn. Wedding parties come for the Tithe Barn's private rooms and the photography opportunities across the walled garden; overnight guests come for something else entirely, a seven-table restaurant called The Tudor Pass that earned a Michelin star in spring 2023 under chef Stefano Di Giosia, who trained at The Fat Duck and KOL before cooking here with produce pulled from the estate's own kitchen gardens and orchards. That kind of intimate, ingredient-led dining is not something the area's other country houses near the M3 and M25 can claim, and it changes what a stay here is for: less a base for sightseeing, more a reason to travel. A second restaurant handles broader tastes with locally sourced, art-surrounded dining, while the bar and cafe cover the rest of the day. The 43 rooms range from compact doubles to suites with fireplaces and garden views, and the grounds stretch to an indoor and a heated outdoor pool, a spa with massage rooms, tennis, golf, horse riding and a picnic area for slower afternoons. Playrooms and babysitting keep families in mind, though this reads more as a couples' or small-wedding retreat than a place built around children's activities. Heathrow sits close enough for an early flight out, which makes the manor's stillness feel deliberate rather than remote. Anyone wanting a modern, minimal room with city buzz outside the window should look elsewhere; anyone wanting a moated garden and a genuinely rare table should book ahead, since seven tables fill fast. A moated, walled-garden manor near Heathrow where a seven-table Michelin-starred restaurant outranks the setting itself. Wedding parties book the 14th century Tithe Barn; solo food travellers book a table at The Tudor Pass. Good for a slow, adult-paced escape, less so for families chasing kids' clubs.
