THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Old Parsonage Hotel
The garden library at Old Parsonage Hotel sits behind a facade that has watched Oxford change since 1660, and that is the fact worth knowing before anything else: this is a boutique hotel built into genuine old stone, not a period-style build dressed up to look the part. Thirty-five rooms across three floors keep it small enough that the 24-hour reception knows faces, and close enough to Keble and Somerville Colleges, and the Martyrs' Memorial, that the five-minute walk into central Oxford barely counts as a commute. Rooms carry indoor fireplaces, bathrobes, slippers and minibars rather than anything showy, which suits a guest who wants comfort without spectacle. Two terraces and that garden library give quiet corners for reading or working that a larger hotel simply has no room for. Downstairs, the Parsonage Bar & Grill runs modern British food from breakfast through late evening, and a private dining room seating twenty, alongside a civil wedding licence, means the hotel handles small gatherings as easily as solo stays. Free bicycle rental makes the colleges and river paths genuinely reachable without a car, useful given parking is offsite only. Concierge, dry cleaning, laundry and multilingual staff (English, French, Spanish, Polish) cover the practical side without fuss. It does not suit anyone chasing a pool, a spa, or size for its own sake, and pets are not permitted. Business travellers get a conference hall and meeting rooms if needed, but this is fundamentally a hotel for people who want history under their feet and Oxford within walking distance, not a stage set of either.\n\nA 1660 building turned 35-room hotel, minutes from Keble and Somerville Colleges, with a garden library and terraces that larger hotels don't have room for. Not for pool seekers or pet owners, but right for anyone who wants real Oxford history within walking distance.
