THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Cromlix House Hotel
Cromlix House sits at the end of a long drive in Kinbuck, outside Dunblane, a Victorian mansion Kim and Andy Murray run as fifteen individually designed rooms, not a chain-standard hotel. Some keep an indoor fireplace lit through the colder months, and no two look quite the same, from turret suites to garden rooms. The grounds do the rest of the work: a library for wet afternoons, a billiards room, a picnic area, and walking routes through the Stirlingshire countryside, with Glasgow thirty-six miles off and Edinburgh forty-eight if the city calls after all. Dinner runs from the bar through to Cradle, the hotel's fine-dining restaurant, with the Garden Room and afternoon tea in the Glasshouse for slower days. Dogs are welcome for a modest per-stay charge, which says something about how the place is actually run. A concierge sorts out tours, laundry and dry-cleaning turn around quickly, and a conference hall covers the rare business trip. What Cromlix has that bigger country estates don't is scale built for intimacy: fifteen rooms is small enough for a wedding party to take over the whole house, and too few for the place to ever feel corporate. It suits a woman wanting a week properly away from a screen, or a couple after somewhere with a fire and no interruptions; it will frustrate anyone wanting nightlife on the doorstep or the anonymity of a large hotel. Extra beds run sixty-five pounds a night, built more for couples and small groups than families stacking three to a room. There's no pretence here, just a fire, a dog welcome by it, and Stirlingshire outside the window, and that turns out to be enough.\n\nCromlix House is a fifteen-room Victorian mansion outside Dunblane, run by Kim and Andy Murray with individually designed rooms, a library, and dogs welcome by the fire for a small fee. It suits a quiet countryside week for two, not families needing space or nightlife on the doorstep.
