THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Dewberry Charleston
The Dewberry occupies the former L. Mendel Rivers Federal Building, a 1964 mid-century courthouse that owner John Dewberry spent eight years gutting and reimagining, down to hand-gilded cranes in the Swanston Room, custom botanical armoires, Vermont-selected marble, vintage Danish furnishings and a bespoke Woka brass chandelier in the lobby. It is the rare Charleston hotel built inside a mid-century federal building rather than a historic townhouse, and that shift in bones sets the whole property apart. The 155 rooms across eight floors carry the same restraint: minibars, flat-screen TVs, bathrobes and slippers, with Flats and a One-Bedroom Suite for guests who want more room to spread out. Henrietta's serves French-leaning plates for lunch, dinner and brunch, and the bar/lounge is where the evening tends to settle. The spa, clad in cypress and stocked with Natura Bissé, runs treatments curated by Lydia Mondavi, and the fitness studio opens at 5am with Peloton bikes for guests who won't skip a session even on holiday. The concierge desk arranges a private yacht charter with Barton & Gray, a Volvo house car packed for a day at the barrier island beaches, or a guided visit to the Charleston Library Society's Special Collections, 275 years old and rarely opened to outsiders. Marion Square and the Charleston Museum sit a few minutes' walk away, TD Arena and the Music Hall a little further. This suits travelers who want design-led luxury rather than period charm, and who'd rather book an excursion than plan one. It will read as spare to anyone who came to Charleston for a historic townhouse. A $300 deposit applies per room, per stay, and pets are not permitted. The Dewberry rebuilt Charleston's 1964 federal courthouse into 155 design-forward rooms, a cypress-lined spa and a concierge desk that arranges private yacht charters. It suits travelers after modernist luxury rather than period charm, less so those wanting a historic townhouse. A $300 deposit applies per stay.

The Dewberry occupies Charleston's landmark L. Mendel Rivers Federal Building, built circa 1964, rescued and reimagined over eight years by a team of architects and designers. Details like hand-gilded cranes, custom botanical armoires, Vermont marble, and vintage Danish furnishings juxtapose the building's mid-century bones with contemporary craft.
An on-site restaurant and bar serve guests throughout the day.
