THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Pinch Hotel
On the corner of King and George Street in Charleston's Ansonborough neighborhood, The Pinch occupies three buildings, two of them original: an 1869 storefront that once housed Bob Ellis, its facade retained along King Street, and the 1843 Lequeux-Williams House, now home to Lowland, the hotel's MICHELIN-recognized restaurant, where Executive Chef Matthew Dion serves Southern-inspired plates in a cobblestone courtyard. That combination, two 19th-century structures folded into a single 25-room hotel, is what sets it apart on this stretch of King Street. Rooms are individually decorated, with kitchenettes, in-room safes, and Smart TVs; the higher suites add full kitchens and private terraces or balconies, useful for anyone staying long enough to want to cook rather than order room service. A concierge team arranges details down to in-room floral arrangements and private sailing excursions, and there are complimentary bikes for covering the historic district faster than on foot. The building is wheelchair accessible with an elevator connecting floors, and there is a spa on site, though massage appointments must be booked ahead of arrival. None of this suits anyone bringing a dog, since pets aren't allowed, or travelers who want the scale and anonymity of a few hundred rooms; this is a 25-room house built for people who want Charleston's history underfoot and a good dinner across the courtyard. Check-in runs from 4pm, check-out by 11am. The facade above the sidewalk still reads 1869, while the rooms behind it were rebuilt entirely, down to the Waterworks fixtures in the bathrooms. The Pinch occupies two nineteenth-century Charleston buildings, including the 1869 storefront on King Street, with Lowland, a MICHELIN-recognized restaurant, in its courtyard. Twenty-five individually decorated rooms range from kitchenette doubles to two-bedroom suites with private terraces. Pets aren't allowed, and there's no scale here for large groups.
