THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
El Portal Sedona Hotel
El Portal sits on the historic Schnebly family homestead, an adobe hacienda with just twelve rooms, each furnished differently, several holding an adobe corner fireplace, hand-painted accents and high, beamed ceilings, a level of individual detail no larger Sedona property attempts at this scale. A courtyard with a fire pit gives guests somewhere to end the day, and the location is walking distance from the center of Sedona, close to Honanki, Snoopy Rock and the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, with Oak Creek a short stroll away and the Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village right at the edge of the property. There's an outdoor pool, a fitness room, and a spa wing with sauna, steam room and massage, though treatments need booking ahead. A bar, coffee and tea, and a snack bar cover the smaller hours; the front desk keeps limited hours, from 7am to 6pm, and contactless check-in is available for later arrivals. Staff speak English and Spanish, and a concierge, tour assistance desk and laundry service handle the logistics guests would rather not think about. Dogs are welcome, and unlike many hotels, El Portal doesn't add a pet fee. A picnic area, library and sun deck give the grounds a slower pace than most Sedona stopovers built for one night. There are two floors and no elevator, worth flagging for anyone with heavy luggage, though wheelchair-accessible features are on site. A $35 nightly resort fee covers fitness and spa access, bottled water and partner-property pool use. This suits travelers drawn to Sedona's art scene who don't mind a small, idiosyncratic property over a full-service resort, and it won't suit anyone wanting elevators, large rooms or anonymity. A twelve-room adobe hacienda on the old Schnebly homestead, El Portal sits at the edge of Sedona's Tlaquepaque arts district, each room furnished differently around fireplaces and hand-painted details. Dogs stay free of extra fees, though the two-story property has no elevator.
