THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Hay-Adams
On the wraparound balcony of Top of the Hay, the rooftop bar at The Hay-Adams, the White House sits close enough to feel like a neighbour rather than a monument, its lawns and Lafayette Square laid out below in one uninterrupted line of sight that no other hotel in Washington can claim. Built in the 1920s as a residential hotel, the property keeps that scale: 145 rooms across eight floors, worked rather than warehoused, with bathrobes, minibars and blackout blinds standard even in the entry-level Standard Double. Deluxe rooms run to 385 square feet, and the Junior Suites hold onto the park view that gives the address its point. Staff answer in English, Spanish, Italian, German or French, and a doctor is on call rather than a name on a laminated card. The Lafayette restaurant does upscale contemporary American cooking under natural light by day and candlelight by night; Off The Record, downstairs, trades in cocktails and a wall of political cartoons that only make sense once you've spent a day in this city. Dogs are welcome, cars can be arranged, and a fitness room and business center cover the practical end without ceremony. This suits someone who wants proximity to power: a lobbyist between meetings, a couple marking an anniversary with a proper dinner, a reader who likes her history walkable. It will feel wasted on anyone chasing a pool or a beach towel. Check in at four, check out at noon, and a security deposit is expected either way. Few hotels anywhere look directly at a head of state's front lawn. This one does, every evening, from its own roof. The Hay-Adams sits directly across Lafayette Square from the White House, a view its rooftop bar makes the most of every evening. Built as a 1920s residential hotel with just 145 rooms, it rewards proximity over poolside, since there isn't one.
