THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Jiva Hoa Lu Retreat
Jiva Hoa Lu Retreat arranges its 164 rooms and villas around a central pond, mirroring a cluster of traditional Vietnamese rural villages set among the limestone hills of Ninh Binh, six kilometres from Hoa Lu's centre and a short drive from Mua Cave. Everything sits on two floors with no elevators, so guests move between garden pavilions on foot, which suits people who want a slow week more than those who need ground-floor convenience. Rooms start with a compact Deluxe Queen or Twin and climb, through cottages and standalone villas, to spaces more than five times that size, some with private terraces facing the karsts. What separates Jiva from most retreats in the valley is what runs beneath the grounds: greywater from every stay, roughly 30 cubic metres a day, is treated and recycled on-site to water over two hectares of garden, so none of the landscaping draws on fresh water, and solar panels supply close to 36,000 kilowatt-hours a month. Over 80 percent of staff are hired locally, and the kitchen grows its own basil, guava, and passionfruit. Days can be spent cycling the valley on the property's bicycles, fishing, hiking, or sitting with a book near the picnic area, while a spa, sauna, gym, and pool with a separate children's pool cover quieter afternoons; a restaurant, bar, and concierge desk handle the rest, with airport transfer and laundry arranged on request. Pets are not permitted, and an extra bed runs 3,500,000 VND a night. This isn't a hotel for anyone wanting nightlife within walking distance; it's for travellers happy to let a pond and a limestone valley set the pace of the week. Villas ring a central pond in Ninh Binh's limestone valleys, six kilometres from Hoa Lu, its greywater recycled to water two hectares of garden without fresh water. Good for travellers wanting slow days across two low-rise floors, not for anyone chasing nightlife.
