La Bastide de Marie
Between Ménerbes and Bonnieux in the Luberon, La Bastide de Marie is an 18th-century stone house that Jocelyne and Jean-Louis Sibuet transformed into something that sidesteps the usual Provençal farmhouse clichés. The couple fell for an old bastide surrounded by vineyards 25 years ago, and what they've built feels more bohemian baroque than rustic country hotel. Antique furnishings mixed with contemporary pieces, rich fabrics in linen and denim, and a monumental fireplace for cooler evenings. The bastide has 14 rooms and suites, each different, plus a 17-square-meter roulotte (gypsy caravan) for anyone who wants the full bohemian experience. For groups or families, there are private villas with their own pools scattered across the 26-hectare vineyard. The property makes its own AOC wines through Domaine de Marie, just steps from the hotel, and you can tour the cellars and taste the red, rosé, and white production. Two outdoor pools, a spa room with Pure Altitude treatments, and lounges arranged around that big fireplace give you reasons to stay on the property all day. The restaurant changes its menu daily based on what's seasonal and local. You eat either in the atmospheric dining room or on the terrace under a lime tree with views across the vineyard. Afternoon brings iced tea, pastries, and cocktails. The kitchen uses produce from the estate when possible, and their vineyard's production takes priority on the list. The Sibuets are among France's top hoteliers, and the service here reflects that without feeling stuffy. What to Know Before You Go
Perfect Timing
Go in late June or early September if you can. Provence in high summer is beautiful but chaotic. Bastide de Marie is at its best when the light is still strong but the roads are not too busy.
What to pack
