On the outskirts of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, screened behind cypress hedges along the chemin de Chalamon, a sixteenth-century bastide sits within roughly thirty-seven acres of parkland in the Alpilles regional park, expanded over fifteen acres of formal gardens, and counts nineteen rooms and suites across the main house and its outbuildings. The property belongs to Les Domaines de Fontenille, the family group behind half a dozen country hotels across the south of France, and the renovation was overseen by the architect Alexandre Lafourcade, whose father had worked on an earlier restoration of the same bastide and whose mother, the landscape designer Dominique Lafourcade, laid out the gardens some thirty years before the hotel itself opened. It is, in effect, a family project carried across two generations, the architecture and the planting both bearing the Lafourcade name, and the hotel that resulted in the late spring trades on that continuity rather than disguising it. The six gardens, Dominique Lafourcade's work, are the property's clearest achievement, a cypress esplanade, lawns, olive groves shaped by topiary, and streams that keep the grounds cool through the Provençal summer, with produce from the kitchen garden feeding the hotel's light menu. Rooms are named for figures associated with Impressionism, Max, Paul and Vincent among them, and run from thirty-two to thirty-eight square metres, finished in white walls, wicker and rattan, pastel tones, and Susanne Kaufmann bath products, with Mariage Frères teas and Nespresso machines as standard. There is a heated outdoor pool ringed with box hedges and pink parasols, a tennis court, an orangery, and an arbour for reading, but no formal restaurant, the food programme instead built around a daily breakfast, a light all-day snack menu of salads and shared plates for in-house guests, and an afternoon cake service, with wines drawn from the Fontenille group's own vineyards. The experience is closer to staying in a private house that happens to have a pool and a tennis court than to a conventional hotel, the absence of a restaurant pushing the rhythm towards the gardens, the arbour, and the terrace rather than towards a dining room, and the small room count keeping the place quiet even when occupied. It suits a traveller who wants Provence without the performance of it, who is happy to spend an afternoon moving between sunlounger, shade and a pot of tea, and who has a car or bicycle for the short run into Saint-Rémy itself, since Chalamon is deliberately set apart from the town's markets and galleries rather than among them. You should not come if you want an on-site restaurant for dinner, or if you are travelling without transport and expect to walk into Saint-Rémy each evening. You should come for the gardens themselves, for a stay built around stillness rather than itinerary, and for the particular comfort of a house where the same family has shaped both the stones and the planting.
