THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Grand Hotel du Palais Royal
At 4 Rue de Valois, on the quiet side of the 1st arrondissement where the Palais Royal gardens meet the back streets behind the Comédie-Française, the Grand Hôtel du Palais Royal occupies an 18th-century building on the site of the former Théâtre de l'Opéra, its façade officially listed as a historic monument. The Louvre is a five-minute walk, the Tuileries not much further, and the hotel's own claim, that it is the only luxury address with rooms actually looking onto the Palais Royal gardens, happens to be true rather than a brochure line. The building was taken through a full renovation completed in 2023, and it is run today under the direction of owner Alexandra Marang, who chose the palette of lime green and brown that recurs through the rooms and speaks of a proprietor with opinions rather than a management company with a brand book. The interiors are by Pierre-Yves Rochon, the same designer behind The Savoy in London and the Four Seasons Firenze, and his hand here favours pale oak floors, velvet, leather and silk over gilt. There are 59 rooms and suites, 22 of them suites, arranged around a central staircase with a wrought-iron banister, at the foot of which a repurposed trunk serves as the luggage room. Diptyque toiletries and a shoeshine service are standard; the top-floor Eiffel Tower Suite, reached by private lift, has solid oak parquet and its own curved dome ceiling, and the Panoramic Rooftop Suite gives a 180-degree sweep taking in the Eiffel Tower, Sacré-Coeur and the gardens below. Café 52 Paris 1er, the in-house restaurant, runs on chef Maxime Raab's seasonal, organic-leaning menu and opens onto the courtyard terrace on Place de Valois; on Sundays there is a champagne brunch from 12.30 to 2.30pm. Downstairs, the Holidermie spa has a mosaic-tiled hammam and a Technogym fitness room open around the clock. What it feels like is a family-run apartment building that happens to have 59 keys and a Michelin key of its own, rather than a grand hotel in the old chandeliers-and-liveried-doormen sense. The scale keeps service personal, the staircase and courtyard keep it intimate, and the location does something few Paris hotels can claim, which is put you inside the view rather than near it. It suits a traveller who wants the 1st arrondissement without the Place Vendôme price tag or the Ritz's theatre, someone who would rather sit on a quiet square with a coffee than fight the crowds at Café de Flore. You should not come if you want sweeping public rooms, a grand lobby to be seen in, or the scale of a 200-room palace hotel with multiple restaurants and a resident sommelier. This is a small hotel that reads as intimate rather than grand, whatever its name suggests, and rooms on the lower floors and interior-facing sides are handsome but ordinary, not the kind of considered editorial restraint you might want from a small boutique hotel, but the gardens and the top-floor suites do most of the work. You should come for a top-floor suite with a private terrace, for Café 52 on a Sunday morning, and for a location that puts the Palais Royal gardens, not a postcard of them, directly outside your window. The short version: An 18th-century, Pierre-Yves Rochon-designed hotel of 59 rooms and suites on Place de Valois, facing the Palais Royal gardens, run by owner Alexandra Marang, with one MICHELIN Key and Café 52's Sunday brunch.
