Estalagem Quinta da Casa Branca
Follow the gravel path past camphor trees and a banana plantation planted in the mid-19th century by a family of Madeira wine merchants, and the pool at Quinta da Casa Branca appears wrapped in bougainvillea, a few minutes' walk from Funchal's Lido Bathing Complex but a world away from its promenade. The 49-room hotel occupies gardens first planted by the Leacock family, Madeira wine merchants whose former private residence now forms the Manor House, home to five suites with wooden floors and individually furnished sitting rooms that no newly built boutique property on the island can replicate. The main building, opened in 1998 and extended in 2002 by Madeira architect João Favila Menezes, uses black volcanic slate and glass to face the sea rather than the traditional quinta style, and it earned the City of Funchal Architecture Prize in 1999. A 2026 refurbishment renewed the Garden Rooms and the main pool without adding new buildings; the scale stays intimate, with two floors, an indoor and outdoor pool, a library, and a health club offering sauna, steam room and massage treatments. Guests who want to hike the levadas, hire a bike or book a dive can arrange it at the desk, and the Green Key and Biosphere certifications matter to those who ask before they book. It suits travellers who want a quiet, plant-filled base with a real address in local history rather than an international chain, and less so anyone chasing nightlife or bringing a pet, since none are allowed. What lingers after checkout is not the pool or the spa but the sense of staying inside someone else's garden, one that has been growing since before the hotel existed. A five-suite Manor House built on a 19th-century Madeira wine estate sets this Funchal quinta apart from any new-build boutique nearby. Forty-nine rooms sit inside a botanical garden with two pools and a spa. It suits travellers wanting quiet grounds and real history, not nightlife.

The outdoor Jacuzzi in the hotel’s banana plantation remains available.
