The staircase at Villa Soro is carved from oak, the ceiling holds a stained-glass window tracing the Londaiz family lineage, and outside, a garden laid out by Pierre Ducasse, gardener to the Royal Palace, keeps its own quiet order. The building went up in the 19th century as a British-style family home for the Londaiz family, textile merchants who once owned one of the largest textile companies in Spain; it kept its private chapel and its high-ceilinged lounges when it opened as a 25-room hotel in 2003, two kilometres from central San Sebastián. Ducasse, who also designed the city's Miramar, Aiete and Cristina Enea parks, is the reason Villa Soro can claim something no other hotel here has: a garden that feels like open countryside despite standing in the heart of the city. Mornings run to breakfast at Eguzki Soro, evenings to Cantabrian anchovies and Rioja Alavesa wine at the bar; a 24-hour gym occupies the old stable building, and bikes go out free onto the 75 kilometres of cycle lanes that pass the gate. A business center and the fireplace-lit Londaiz Room handle meetings for up to forty guests.
