THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Barriere Le Fouquet's
On the corner where the Champs-Élysées meets avenue George V, in the eighth arrondissement's Golden Triangle, the hotel stands behind and around the brasserie that gives it its name, a café bought by the lemonade seller Louis Fouquet in 1899 and turned, over a century of Césars dinners and postwar aviators' reunions, into one of Paris's listed historic monuments. The Barrière family acquired Fouquet's in 1998, spent eight years assembling seven adjoining buildings behind it, and opened the hotel on 6 November 2006, built by the architect Édouard François and decorated throughout by Jacques Garcia. It earned its fifth star in June 2009, closed for a year-long renovation in early 2017, reopened that July with the room count settled at 101 rooms and suites, and was named a Palace hotel in June 2026, twenty years after it opened. The group's chairman, Dominique Desseigne, son of the late Diane Barrière-Desseigne, still runs it as the flagship of a portfolio that includes houses in Deauville and Cannes. Garcia's decoration runs to Napoleon III and Art Deco in roughly equal measure, gold and beige fabrics against black granite bathrooms, mahogany furniture, damask curtains and padded headboards that verge on the theatrical without losing the sense of a private apartment. Food is spread across three kitchens: the brasserie Fouquet's itself, its menu overseen by Pierre Gagnaire, serving steak tartare and sole meunière beneath red awnings that have not changed in decades; Le Joy, set behind a hidden garden for a lighter, more contemporary register; and the hotel's Michelin-starred dining room. Three bars, L'Escadrille on the Champs-Élysées side, the felted Le Lucien, and the speakeasy Le Marta, cover the rest of the evening. The spa runs to 750 square metres with a 15-metre indoor pool, and the presidential suite, at 250 square metres, looks over both avenues and, on a clear day, the Eiffel Tower. Staying here means accepting that you are inside a piece of Parisian mythology, not a discreet retreat from it: the lobby opens straight onto one of the most photographed street corners in Europe, butlers are assigned by default and not by request, and the hotel's own history, the Césars, the film crowd, the decades of red awnings, is never far from the conversation. It suits guests who want the address as much as the room, who like knowing that the next table at the brasserie might hold someone recognisable, and who read Haussmannian grandeur as comfort, not excess. It is a hotel built around visibility, and it does that job with more precision than warmth. You should not come if you want anonymity, a quiet courtyard, or interiors with the kind of restraint that lets a building's own bones do the talking, Garcia's rooms are handsome but they are not shy, and the location guarantees traffic noise and tourist attention at street level. You should come for the address itself, for a brasserie that has hosted a century of Parisian glamour without becoming a museum piece, and for the particular French professionalism, butlers, concierges, a spa built to hotel rather than boutique scale, that a house this size delivers without strain. The short version: A 101-room Palace hotel on the corner of the Champs-Élysées and avenue George V, built around the 1899 brasserie Fouquet's, decorated by Jacques Garcia, and run by the Barrière family since 1998, with three restaurants and a 750 square metre spa.
