Assembled from more than two dozen separate freeholds behind Great Windmill Street, a process that took Tim and Kit Kemp the better part of a decade before building work began, Ham Yard Hotel opened in 2014 as the first Firmdale property built from scratch rather than converted from an existing structure. The address is two minutes from Piccadilly Circus and considerably quieter than that fact suggests, tucked into the knot of alleys between Shaftesbury Avenue and Great Windmill Street that Soho's postwar rebuilding left in pieces for sixty years. The hotel has 91 rooms and suites, arranged around a private courtyard that doubles as an events space in summer, complete with its own bandstand. It is run, as all seven Firmdale hotels are, under the direct design eye of Kit Kemp, with Tim Kemp overseeing the business side. Kemp's interiors here lean into her signature English maximalism, bold custom prints, hand-painted wallpapers, and one-off furniture commissioned from British makers, all set against a backdrop that includes a working 1950s-style bowling alley in the basement, a 190-seat cinema, and a rooftop garden with beehives and a kitchen plot that supplies herbs to the restaurant below. The restaurant and bar serve modern British food built around produce from that same rooftop where practical, and the ground-floor library, with its fireplace and honesty bar, functions as the hotel's unofficial living room. Contemporary art, much of it specially commissioned, is worked into the public spaces rather than added afterward, and the spa runs a small but serious treatment list alongside a Pilates studio. The feel is sociable rather than hushed, a hotel that assumes its guests are in London to be in London, not to hide from it. Soho's theatres are a ten-minute walk in any direction, and the courtyard and bar draw a local crowd as much as a resident one, so evenings here have a hum to them that a Mayfair townhouse hotel would not. It suits people who want a serious address inside the action, who like pattern and colour in a room rather than restraint, and who value being able to walk to a show, a members' club, or a decent negroni without getting in a cab. You should not come if you want quiet, minimalist rooms or a country-house pace within the city. You should not come if Soho's foot traffic and late-night energy are things you'd rather avoid at your own front door.
