THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Ivens, Autograph Collection
Walk in from Rua Capelo and the first thing you notice is not marble or hush but macaws, beetles, and tropical plants arranged like a genteel jungle, the signature of a 19th-century Lisbon townhouse rebuilt as The Ivens in 2021. The hotel sits at the literal crossroads of two streets named for the explorers Roberto Ivens and Hermenegildo Capelo, a few minutes' walk from Baixa-Chiado, Bertrand, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, so the city's shops, galleries, and bookstores are on the doorstep rather than a taxi ride away. Eighty-seven rooms, including ten suites, cover most tastes, but the Signature Suites are the reason to book ahead, perched on the top floor with private terraces overlooking the Tagus, a view few hotels in Chiado can offer. Downstairs, the day moves between an Italian osteria, a raw-fish bar, and Barra, with a jazz club adding a reason to stay past dinner, plus a 24-hour gym and a garden. This suits someone who wants a heritage building with a pulse, not a retreat from the city but a base inside it, concierge on hand to book tables at Michelin-starred neighbours. It will read as too theatrical for anyone wanting minimalist calm or a quiet lobby. A 100 EUR deposit applies per room, and pets are not allowed. What lingers after checkout is not the room but the lobby menagerie, an oddity no other address in Chiado attempts. The Ivens turns a 19th-century Chiado townhouse into something closer to a curiosity cabinet, with macaws, a jazz club, and Signature Suites that open onto private terraces above the Tagus. It suits travellers who want the city center with personality, not those chasing quiet minimalism.
