On the sixth floor of Hotel Motto, mirrored walls carry graffiti by the artist Sasha Knezevic, one line reading if you don't go crazy, you are normal, while works by Georg Dinstl, Daniel Sommergruber and Verena Andrea Prenner appear in select ART DELUXE rooms among the hotel's eight, a rehang no other hotel on Mariahilfer Straße bothers with. Built in 2021 and run by Austria Hotels International, the 91-room property sits minutes from Neubaugasse, the Leopold Museum and the Museumsquartier, with rooms looking onto Mariahilfer Straße itself, Schadekgasse, or a quiet inner courtyard. Rooms are floored in oiled herringbone parquet, fitted with box spring beds on natural materials and 210cm mattresses, and set behind large French windows built for the noise of Vienna's traffic below. The seventh-floor restaurant serves what it calls a Viennese melange of styles rather than picking a lane, and MOTTO Brot, the hotel's own organic bakery, sends breakfast out to a summer garden on the street or straight to the room. A sauna, steam room and fitness space cover the routine wellness ask, staff speak seven languages from Arabic to Russian, and pets travel for a modest fee. None of this suits anyone chasing a landmark address or a lobby full of marble; Motto reads more workshop than palace, and the art rooms will grate on guests who want their hotel neutral. But for a traveller who wants somewhere built this decade, staffed to actually help, and willing to put real artists on the walls instead of prints, it holds up past the first night. The bakery downstairs alone is reason enough to stay another morning. Hotel Motto pairs a 2021 build on Mariahilfer Straße with commissioned art in its ART DELUXE rooms and an in-house bakery instead of a buffet breakfast. It works for someone who wants central Vienna without the formality, not for anyone after a traditional grand hotel.
