THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Fex
The shuttle from Sils Post runs four times a day, but not at all between eleven and three, so guests plan around it or walk the last stretch into Val Fex on foot, luggage left at the depot near the post office. That gap is the point: this valley has banned cars since 1954, and with them power lines, ski lifts and cable cars, a protection status held jointly by the local commune, Swiss Heritage Protection, Pro Natura and Pro Helvetia. About a hundred people live here year-round, and Hotel Fex, a fifteen-room house in the middle of it, is built around that quiet rather than against it. Rooms are simple: some share a bathroom or have only a washbasin, others come as an Alpenzimmer with wide valley views, and none pretend to be more than they are. Evenings center on the Stüva, a rustic Bündnerstube with a fireplace where fondue is served, or the dining room, where a multi-course dinner follows a rich mountain breakfast. The terrace and veranda both face the glacier, and the library gives readers on rainy afternoons a place to disappear. Staff speak English, Spanish, Italian, German and French, and pets travel with their owners. This suits hikers, walkers and anyone who wants the Engadine's 322 days of yearly sunshine without needing a car to enjoy it. It will frustrate anyone wanting a lift-served ski run at the door, an ensuite in every room, or the option to drive away on a whim. What Val Fex offers instead, and few Alpine addresses can claim, is a valley legally kept free of the infrastructure that changed everywhere else around it. Val Fex has been car-free since 1954, with no power lines or ski lifts, and Hotel Fex sits fifteen rooms deep inside that stillness. Evenings mean fondue by the Stüva fireplace or a multi-course dinner. It suits hikers who accept the shuttle's midday gap, not drivers wanting a quick exit.
