THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Paracas a Luxury Collection Resort
Where Peru's coastal desert runs straight into the Pacific, in Paracas Bay on the edge of the Ica region's Pisco Province, three hours south of Lima and fifteen minutes from the Pisco airport, the water is flat and the sand outside town runs a rust red. The original Hotel Paracas opened here in 1944, held its ground through six decades of Art Deco use, and was leveled by the earthquake that struck the region in August 2007, the same quake that devastated the town of Pisco itself. What stands now opened in 2009, rebuilt from the ground by the Miami-based, Peru-born architect Bernardo Fort-Brescia of Arquitectonica, who also holds a stake in the property, a decision that shows in how closely the building tracks the site rather than a brand template. It runs to 120 rooms and 16 suites across two-story whitewashed blocks with cobalt-blue doors, laid out in the cubist, low-slung style Fort-Brescia has used from the Four Seasons Dubai to Canyon Ranch Miami. The hotel belongs to Libertador Hotels, Resorts & Spas, the largest Peruvian-owned hotel group, which operates it under Marriott's Luxury Collection banner and runs three further Libertador and Luxury Collection properties in Lima, the Sacred Valley and Cusco. Inside, the rooms lean on bamboo wall coverings and geometric textile patterns drawn from the Paracas culture, whose weavers are still cited as some of the finest of the pre-Columbian world, alongside stone bathrooms, wood floors and 400-thread-count linens, with roughly a third of the rooms facing the bay directly. Two restaurants cover the food, Ballestas for a Peruvian-Mediterranean menu built around the bay view at breakfast, and La Trattoria, an Italian room for pizza and pasta aimed as much at families with children as anyone else. There are two heated pools, a private dock used for boat trips out to the Ballestas Islands and flights over the Nazca Lines, and the Aqu Spa, which works Andean grape, seaweed and native tea into its treatments. Kayaks, catamarans and sand bicycles are free to guests, and the gardens, thick with bougainvillea against the desert beyond the walls, are the one visibly soft note in an otherwise hard-edged, geometric property. The feeling is of a fixed, comfortable outpost dropped between two harsh landscapes, the Pacific on one side and the driest stretch of coastal desert on the other, with the hotel itself doing the work of softening both. It reads less like a boutique retreat and more like a well-run resort built for a specific piece of geography, useful as a base for people moving between Lima and the south, or breaking up a Nazca or Ballestas itinerary with two comfortable nights rather than a rushed day trip from the capital. The conference facility seats up to 500, and Libertador markets the property hard to groups and weddings, which means the pool deck at certain times of year belongs more to a corporate offsite than to a couple looking for quiet. You should not come if you want a small, design-forward hotel with the kind of editorial restraint that comes from having twenty rooms instead of a hundred and thirty six, or if a full conference calendar at the next table would bother you. You should come if you want direct, unfussy access to the Ballestas Islands and the Paracas National Reserve from your own dock, a comfortable double-pool resort with real Peruvian ownership behind it, and a piece of the coast that most Lima-to-Cusco itineraries skip entirely. The short version: A 120-room, 16-suite Luxury Collection resort on Paracas Bay, rebuilt by Bernardo Fort-Brescia after the 2007 earthquake, Peruvian-owned by Libertador, with a private dock, two pools and direct access to the Ballestas Islands and Paracas National Reserve.
