THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
CIRQA - Relais & Châteaux
Calle Sucre runs one block from Arequipa's main square, and behind an unmarked sillar stone wall sits a building that was already old when the city was young. CIRQA occupies a former monastery dating to 1540, once linked to the San Agustín Church next door, on a site protected as part of the historic UNESCO centre. Eleven rooms only, spread over two floors with no elevator, so a top-floor Aposento means carrying your own bag up stone stairs. That scale is the thing peers in this city do not have: most Arequipa hotels multiply rooms into the hundreds, while CIRQA kept the footprint of the original chambers. The three room types, Claustro, Aposento and Bóveda, each read differently. Claustro is the smallest and closest to a monk's cell, tidied up with modern comforts. Bóveda keeps the high vaulted ceilings and adds a stand-alone bathtub. A garden and terrace break up the stone, and the kitchen works from the same picanterías traditions that feed the rest of the city, rather than a hotel-generic menu. Free Wi-Fi, concierge, laundry and a safe-deposit box cover the practical side, and staff will book a tour assistance desk excursion or arrange an airport transfer for 40 USD one way. This suits someone who wants a city-centre address with actual architectural weight, and who does not mind a small property with stairs instead of an elevator, a full events calendar, or a pool. It does not suit anyone travelling with a pet, which the property does not accommodate. Come back to the terrace after a day walking Arequipa's colonial streets and the eleven rooms start to feel less like a limitation and more like the entire point. CIRQA fits eleven rooms into a 1540 monastery one block from Arequipa's main square, no elevator, three distinct room types, and a kitchen built on local picanterías cooking. Good for travellers who want history with weight; not for anyone needing a pool, a pet policy, or ground-floor convenience.

CIRQA's kitchen draws on the flavours and ingredients of traditional Arequipenean countryside picanterias, reinterpreted in a contemporary format for guests staying in the historic Parador. Meals are served a-la-carte or as part of half-board and fully-inclusive packages, alongside a welcome drink and afternoon tea.
