THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Waldorf Astoria New York
In the lobby of the Waldorf Astoria New York, the clock built for the 1893 World's Fair keeps time as it has for over a century, restored along with the rest of the hotel after a renovation led by designer Pierre-Yves Rochon and the architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The property reopened with 375 rooms and suites, including some of the largest in Manhattan, alongside a spa spanning more than 30,000 square feet, a fitness center, sauna, and 43,000 square feet of event space anchored by the Grand Ballroom, where Eleanor Lambert first gathered donors for the Met Gala. That lineage is what sets this hotel apart: its kitchens invented Eggs Benedict and Room Service itself, and the name still carries weight beyond the Midtown block it sits on, steps from Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue, and Grand Central Terminal. Dining runs from Michael Anthony's Lex Yard to the revived Peacock Alley and Yoshoku's kaiseki menus, with a concierge team arranging private art tours and fashion previews on request. Rooms carry minibars, bathrobes, and individually adjustable air conditioning and heating as standard, and suites add terrace views and separate bedrooms for those staying longer. Pets are welcome, the building is wheelchair accessible, and babysitting can be arranged for guests traveling with children. Someone chasing anonymity or a quiet neighborhood corner will find the scale here overwhelming, event traffic and ballroom galas are part of daily life. But for a traveler who wants New York's grandest address without pretending the grandeur is new, who wants both history and a treatment at the Guerlain spa within walking distance of Fifth Avenue, this is a fitting return address. The lobby clock survived the rebuild, and so did the ballroom that once launched the Met Gala. Dining spans Lex Yard to Peacock Alley, and rooms run large by Manhattan standards. Better suited to history lovers than anyone chasing quiet anonymity.
