John Jacob Astor IV opened the St. Regis in 1904 with the goal of creating New York's finest hotel, and over a century later, it still holds that ambition close. The Beaux-Arts building on Fifth Avenue and 55th Street has the kind of architectural presence that stops you on the sidewalk. Inside, it's unabashedly grand: crystal chandeliers, marble everything, and a level of Old New York formality that either appeals to you or it doesn't. The rooms maintain the hotel's commitment to classical luxury. High ceilings, silk wall coverings, marble bathrooms with soaking tubs. The butler service is real, not performative. They'll press your clothes, pack your suitcase, arrange restaurant reservations that are otherwise impossible to secure. Some guests find it excessive, others consider it the entire point of staying here. The suites on higher floors have excellent views of Midtown, though you're paying significantly for the privilege. The King Cole Bar is worth visiting even if you're not a guest. The Maxfield Parrish mural behind the bar is a New York landmark, and the Bloody Mary was allegedly invented here (they call it the Red Snapper). It's the kind of room that looks better at 7pm than at noon, and the bartenders know what they're doing. The location is prime Midtown: walking distance to MoMA, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, and serious shopping on Fifth Avenue. You're in the center of everything, which means you're also in the center of tourist crowds and midtown energy. The St. Regis offers an escape from that, but you're never far from the chaos. This is a hotel for people who want traditional luxury executed at the highest level, who appreciate old-school service, and who don't mind paying for it. It's not trying to be cool or contemporary, and that's precisely its appeal.
