THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Iroquois New York
On 44th Street in Midtown Manhattan, a few steps from Fifth Avenue and within walking distance of the Algonquin Hotel, Belasco Theatre, Bryant Park and Grand Central Station, The Iroquois New York sits in a building dated to 1972, spread across twelve floors and 114 rooms. The lobby holds something most hotels this size skip: an actual library, the kind of room where a guest can sit with a book and a coffee without a hard sell attached. That library, paired with a sauna and spa tucked behind the fitness center and gym, is the one thing here that its Midtown neighbors, stacked with conference rooms and not much else, tend not to have. Though the conference rooms exist too, in a business center and conference hall for guests who came for meetings rather than matinees. Breakfast is Grab&Go only, not a sit-down affair, so anyone picturing a lingering hotel breakfast should recalibrate; the restaurant and bar handle the rest of the day. Rooms range from a 194-square-foot Superior Queen to a 667-square-foot Executive King Suite with city views, and the front desk operates in English, Spanish, German, Polish, Russian, French and Korean. Pets travel for a flat 159 dollars per stay, and a 100-dollar-per-guest, per-night deposit applies at check-in, both worth knowing before booking. This suits a traveller who wants the theatre district and Grand Central within reach but prefers a quieter, book-lined corner of it to a lobby full of rolling luggage. It will not suit anyone set on a full breakfast spread, a pool, or rooms built for spreading out. Twelve floors, one library, and no pretending it is something bigger. The Iroquois New York occupies twelve floors on 44th Street, built around a library, sauna and spa rather than a pool, with Grab&Go breakfast only. Rooms span a 194-square-foot Superior Queen to a 667-square-foot Executive King Suite, steps from Grand Central and Bryant Park.
