Hotel Jerome, An Auberge Resort On the corner of Main and Mill Streets in Aspen, Colorado, in what was once known as Jacob's Corner, the Hotel Jerome opened on Thanksgiving eve in 1889, financed by Jerome B. Wheeler, a co-owner of Macy's who had moved west in 1882 and sunk his fortune into the town's silver boom. Wheeler wanted a hotel that could stand against the grand hotels of Europe, so he hired George W. Myers and the firm of Ellis & Ellis to design a three-story red brick building with round-arch windows and a limestone parapet, spent $150,000 on construction and another $25,000 on furnishings, and installed one of the first full electric lighting systems west of the Mississippi. It survived the 1893 silver crash as a boardinghouse run by a former bartender and his son, was remodeled in gray and blue by Herbert Bayer at Walter Paepcke's direction in 1945, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, and renovated again in 2011 and 2012 by Rowland Broughton Architecture with TAL Studio. It has 94 rooms and suites today, and is run under general manager Stéphane Lacroix as part of Auberge Resorts Collection. Original Victorian appointments remain on the ground floor, where mirrored panels, painted wood trim and a leathered-stone bar sit alongside the building's nineteenth-century bones. The food and drink programme is the hotel's real spine: Prospect, the signature restaurant, holds a Michelin Guide recommendation and hangs original Western photography by David Yarrow; J-Bar has operated continuously since 1889 and was Hunter S. Thompson's de facto campaign office during his 1970 run for Pitkin County sheriff; Bad Harriet, a subterranean cocktail room named for Wheeler's wife, sits beneath the neighboring Aspen Times building; Felix Roasting Co. runs its only location outside New York City off the lobby; and the Garden Room serves lunch under Aspen Mountain in summer. New executive chef Zak Gregoire, formerly of NoMad London, took over the kitchens in 2026 with a mandate built on Colorado producers and high-altitude ingredients. The Grand Ballroom, the only above-ground ballroom in Aspen, seats 300 for dinner and 500 for a reception. What it feels like is the middle of Aspen rather than a retreat from it: this is the hotel that stayed open through the quiet decades, hosted the founding meetings of the Aspen Institute and the Aspen Music Festival in the 1960s, and has never really stopped being the town's social address. Staying here means being three minutes from the Silver Queen Gondola on foot and permanently within range of whatever is happening in the J-Bar that night. It suits travellers who want their history with a drink in hand, not filed away behind a rope. You should not come if you want a quiet mountain hideaway with no street noise and no wedding parties passing through the lobby on a Saturday in July, because the ballroom does steady business and Main Street is Main Street. You should come for a hotel that has been the actual center of Aspen since before Aspen had ski lifts, for a burger at the J-Bar that has outlasted several economies, and for a location that puts the gondola, the Wheeler Opera House and the rest of downtown within walking distance of the front desk.
