Set back from the Cabourg seafront on a stretch of the Calvados coast that Marcel Proust knew well enough to fictionalise as Balbec, Maison Proust opened in 1887 as a private villa for the Deauville textile merchant Étienne Roussel, was requisitioned as a convalescent hospital during the First World War, stood empty for the better part of two decades, and reopened as a forty-one-room hotel in 1962 under the Lefèvre family, who still own it. The current building is largely Roussel's, a belle époque villa with a mansard roof and a wraparound veranda facing the Channel, extended in 1991 with a low glass-and-timber spa wing set into the dune grass. Guy Lefèvre, grandson of the 1962 owner, runs the hotel day to day with his daughter Camille, who trained at the Ritz Paris before coming home to Cabourg in 2014. Between them the property holds forty-one rooms and suites, including four in the original villa with the working fireplaces and uneven floors of the 1887 house. The interiors lean on the period rather than reinvent it: original parquet in the villa rooms, toile de Jouy in three of the suites sourced from an eighteenth-century pattern held by the Musée de la Toile de Jouy in Jouy-en-Josas, and a library stocked with a near-complete run of the Pléiade edition of À la recherche du temps perdu, a nod the Lefèvres allow themselves without labouring it elsewhere in the hotel. The restaurant, La Petite Madeleine, is run by chef Antoine Vasseur, previously at Le Bristol in Paris, and works almost entirely from the Trouville fish market and a network of Norman dairy and cider producers, including unpasteurised Livarot from the Fromagerie Graindorge twenty minutes away. The spa, added in 1991 and renovated in 2018, does thalassotherapy using seawater drawn directly from the bay, four treatment rooms, and a hammam that seats six. Staying here feels less like a beach holiday than a long weekend spent rereading something you loved once and had forgotten the texture of. The pace is set by the tide and by Camille Lefèvre's insistence on not overbooking the restaurant, which means dinner is unhurried even in August. It suits readers, retired academics, couples who want a proper walk on a proper beach and don't need entertainment laid on for them, and anyone who wants the specific pleasure of a French seaside town that has not been rebuilt for a cruise-ship crowd. It does not suit anyone hoping for a pool scene or late-night energy; the bar closes at eleven and nobody apologises for it. You should not come if you want nightlife, a resort pool, or a hotel that performs relaxation at you with gongs and diffusers. You should come for a genuinely quiet stretch of Normandy coastline, a kitchen that takes the local dairy and fish seriously rather than decoratively, and a family that has run one building for three generations without feeling the need to modernise its temperament along with its plumbing.
