THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Eden Roc
On the coast road that drops into Positano from the Sorrento side, a few steps above Spiaggia Grande, Hotel Eden Roc occupies the exact patch of cliffside where its founder, Domenico Casola, played as a boy before leaving for the United States and returning, years later, to build something on it. He opened the doors on the first of August, 1970, after settling back in Positano for good and being recognised in the United States as a Cavaliere del Bene; he ran the hotel for almost fifty years with his wife, Lina, and now does so alongside his sons, Raffaele and Lorenzo, who have expanded the family's holdings around it without loosening their hold on the original building. The hotel itself holds 25 rooms and suites across four floors, supplemented by three annex suites, La Sponda, Bellavista, and Dominick, directly across the road, and two private villas, Villa Eden and Villa degli Dei, for parties who want their own walls. Rooms run toward antique Positano furniture and tiled floors, a style the Casolas have kept consistent through successive renovations rather than chasing whatever look the coast is selling that season. Dinner happens at Adamo ed Eva, two sea-facing terraces and a third, Terrazza Paradiso, set above them at the top of the building, where the kitchen works from the hotel's own vegetable garden and the morning's catch; Roc Pizza & Steak runs alongside it, with bread and pizza dough handled by Francesco Persico, who placed third in the Margherita category at the World Pizza Championships, and beef finished on a Josper grill imported for the purpose, Wagyu from Miyazaki included on a menu otherwise built around the Tyrrhenian. The infinity pool and the Eden Sky Bar occupy the upper terraces, looking past Li Galli toward Punta Licosa and Praiano, and the spa runs to a Turkish bath, sauna, and hot tub for the days no one wants to leave the building at all. What the Eden Roc offers is closer to staying with an extended Italian family that happens to run a hotel than to the formality of Positano's grander addresses along the same stretch of coast: staff remember names and orders without being told twice, Raffaele or Lorenzo will appear at breakfast, and the scale, twenty-five rooms rather than the hundred-plus of the palazzo hotels further down the hill, keeps it that way. It suits a traveller who wants the views and the kitchen without the theatre, someone happy to be greeted by the same face on day one and day five rather than a parade of new staff each time. It is also, because the hotel stands directly on Positano's main road into town, a hotel that hears the road: scooters, delivery vans, the occasional tour bus working its way down to the beach. You should not come if you want isolation, the road noise is real and the hotel makes no pretence of being above it, and you should not come if you are after one of the storied, single-family palazzi that have hosted the same circle of regulars since the 1950s, the Eden Roc's history starts later, in 1970, and it knows it. You should come for a kitchen that takes its pizza and its fish equally seriously, for an infinity pool with a clean run at the bay, and for the kind of attentive, personal service that only happens when the family whose name is on the building is still walking its floors. The short version: A family-run hotel on Positano's coast road, opened in 1970 by Domenico Casola and still run by his sons, with 25 rooms across four floors, two private villas, an infinity pool, and a kitchen split between Mediterranean fish and a pizza chef ranked third at the World Pizza Championships.
