Èze is the kind of medieval village that attracts day-trippers who photograph it and leave, while Château Eza is the reason to stay. Built into the ancient rock walls of a ninth-century village 400 metres above the Mediterranean, the château began its modern life in 1920 when Prince Wilhelm of Sweden arrived on a boating trip, bought the cluster of old houses one by one, joined them together, and named the whole thing after himself and the village. He stayed until 1953, writing here and losing himself to the view, and after the property spent two decades as apartments it was reassembled by a Swiss diplomat and quietly turned into a hotel in 1987. The whole place feels like the outcome of that history: fourteen rooms and suites, each different in size and layout as only a medieval building converted in stages can be, furnished in Louis XIII style with Toile de Jouy fabrics, carved beds, and in one room a Jacuzzi next to an open fire. The smaller rooms look over the village rooftops; the Junior Suites and above open onto private terraces with sea views, and the Presidential Suite adds a hot tub and a panorama that takes in everything from Nice to Monaco. There is no spa and no fitness centre, and this is entirely the right decision. The communal spaces are a lounge bar, a cigar room, and a Michelin-starred restaurant with a glass front that beautifully outlines the coastline below as timeworn as any painting, with an outdoor terrace for the months when the air is warm enough to sit in it. The menu is seasonal French and Mediterranean, built around blue lobster, local lamb, and desserts that pair lavender with honey or chocolate with olive oil, and the tasting menu is the way to experience it properly. Monaco is fifteen minutes by car, Nice thirty, and both feel like they belong to a different world entirely. This is a hotel worth every step of the climb up through the village, for people who understand that fourteen rooms above the Mediterranean, without a poolside DJ or a treatment menu, can be the most serious luxury on the coast. La Trophée des Alpes in La Turbie
en minutes by car above Èze sits one of the most undervisited Roman monuments on the Riviera, a vast triumphal column built by Augustus in 6 BC, with views down to Monaco and the sea. Most guests drive past it without stopping. It rewards the detour.
The perfumer at the foot of the village
The Fragonard laboratory at the base of the rock offers free guided tours of its cosmetic and solid perfume workshops, and a hands-on workshop where you can blend your own eau de toilette. The fragrances are sold only here, not in shops.
