THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Lulu Boutique Hotel
Lulu Boutique Hotel occupies a restored 300-year-old house of character in the village of Zebbug, within walking distance of the old town's alleyways. Clive and Liudmila spent nearly five years turning their family home into eight suites, each one different: two with private heated jacuzzis, a junior suite with a balcony, and a penthouse with its own rooftop pool and terrace, a rarity at this scale that most boutique properties simply don't have room for. Breakfast and a welcome drink are included, and the couple still answers guest emails and organizes tours themselves, matching visitors with local photographers, winemakers or hikers through their Meetup Tours program rather than handing them a generic brochure. Rooms come with goose down bedding, Egyptian cotton sheets, L'Occitane toiletries and a minibar stocked with soft drinks, and staff arrange airport transfers, laundry and private dining on request. There's a library, a barbecue area, a terrace and a shared pool with a bar for those not in the penthouse, plus a concierge desk for anyone wanting Mdina or a Dingli Cliff sunset arranged properly. Pets are welcome for a fee, and the property remains wheelchair accessible via lift despite its historic bones. This suits travelers who want a house with a personality rather than a lobby, people happy to be looked after by the actual owners instead of a rotating front desk. It will frustrate anyone wanting resort scale, a large pool deck, or same-day anonymity; with eight rooms, everyone eventually meets Clive. Book five nights and the ten percent discount follows automatically. Eight individually designed suites in a 300-year-old Zebbug house, two with private jacuzzis and one with a rooftop pool, run by the family who restored it. Good for travelers who want personal attention over resort polish; not for anyone chasing anonymity or scale.

Your taste already has an address

Owner Clive, a self-taught cook with a passion for the wood-burning oven, sources almost everything for the kitchen from local farmers, neighbours' gardens, fishermen and organic markets. Rather than silver service, guests are served traditional Maltese and Italian dishes built around Mediterranean seafood and ever-fresh local produce.
Guests can enjoy the outdoor pool complex and hot tub, with a poolside snack bar for refreshments.
The hotel offers a variety of activities including golf, horseback riding, and snorkeling, plus an entertainment program for adults and children.
Rooms at the hotel come with central heating, a queen size bed and a sofa bed, and free Wi-Fi.
For dining, guests can enjoy a café and a bar, with a delicious breakfast to kickstart the day.
