THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Coleridge
The Coleridge occupies a townhouse in the heart of Valletta that dates to the early 1600s, next door to Palazzo Carafa where Knights of St John Grandmaster Gregorio Carafa once housed his closest staff; the hotel takes its name from poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who stayed nearby and wrote about his time on the island. Only six rooms are spread across four floors, each named rather than numbered: Erskine, Sheridan, Christabel, Stanhope, Fayette and Hatley. Balcony rooms look over the city, the Standard Double Room is set back for quiet, and the Deluxe Suite and the duplex apartment give more space to those staying longer. Malta's capital is a UNESCO World Heritage city of 320 monuments within walking distance, and Valletta Cruise Port is close enough to reach on foot. Guests can book a massage or spa treatment, use the diving club, or hand children over to the playroom for an hour. Multilingual staff, front-desk transfer arrangements and a small conference hall keep both business and leisure travelers covered, and the property runs on water-based paint, rainwater collection and locally sourced ingredients rather than treating sustainability as decor. Travelers who want a swimming pool, a large lobby, or anonymity among hundreds of other guests should look elsewhere; this suits someone who wants six rooms, real history next door, and a staff that knows her name by the second morning. No other hotel in Valletta can claim a 1600s townhouse beside a Grandmaster's palace and a poet's namesake in the same address. A six-room townhouse dating to the early 1600s, set beside a Grandmaster's palace in the heart of UNESCO-listed Valletta. Named for the poet who once wrote about the island, it suits travelers who want history and quiet over pool decks and anonymity.

Your taste already has an address

The Coleridge occupies a building dating to the early 1600s, when Valletta was first being shaped by European architects and engineers. Next door once stood Palazzo Carafa, home to Knights of St John Grandmaster Gregorio Carafa, and this early Baroque palace housed his key employees and friends, a history still felt throughout the townhouse hotel today.
