THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Roseate Edinburgh
At the gateway to old-town Edinburgh, in a building that has stood since the 1860s, The Roseate Edinburgh sits two kilometres from the city centre, close enough to walk to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Vietnam House Art Gallery. Thirty-five rooms spread across three floors keep the corridors quiet. The one thing here that its neighbours in the old town do not have is KIN, the 42-cover restaurant led by Gary Maclean, Scotland's First National Chef, built on Scottish produce handled with a light touch rather than ceremony. Rooms range from a compact Petite Double at 108 square feet to a Standard Double House at 344, several with their own terrace and city views, and some with an indoor fireplace or a deep bathtub for the evenings after long days outside. A garden and terrace offer a quieter spot than the bar, and a playroom means parents are not stuck choosing between the children and the evening. Staff switch between English, French, Italian and Spanish without being asked, and the concierge handles the practical work of laundry, dry cleaning, tour arrangements and a safe-deposit box. Pets are allowed with a thirty pound deposit per stay, an extra bed runs fifty pounds a night, and an optional five percent charge that supports staff is added after the stay, worth knowing in advance. This suits someone who wants a serious kitchen and genuine quiet within walking distance of the galleries, not someone chasing a sprawling resort or a lively late-night scene. Its place in the Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection is a credential. The kitchen at KIN is the reason to book. The Roseate Edinburgh sits two kilometres from the old town, its 35 rooms wrapped around KIN, the 42-cover restaurant run by Scotland's First National Chef, Gary Maclean. Terraces, an indoor fireplace and a garden suit slow mornings more than late nights. Bring the dog for thirty pounds, not the entourage.
