THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Nira Caledonia Hotel
Down a cobbled street in Edinburgh's New Town, a UNESCO World Heritage stretch just 800 metres from Princes Street, stands a Georgian townhouse that once belonged to John Wilson of Elleray, the Scottish advocate and literary critic who wrote as Christopher North for Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. Nira Caledonia keeps that history close: 28 rooms across five floors, each individually decorated with Georgian detailing and large windows onto New Town's terraces, but no lift, a concession to the building's age. That trade-off suits travellers who want atmosphere over infrastructure and don't mind a flight of stairs; it will frustrate anyone who needs step-free access to their room. The restaurant, Blackwoods Edinburgh, cooks with Scottish ingredients and pours from a list of 25 Scotch whiskies, a depth of selection most boutique hotels this size don't attempt. Stockbridge, with its weekly farmers' market and the Water of Leith path for a morning walk, is close enough to reach on foot, and staff arrange golf breaks on parkland courses like Duddingston or links courses near Muirfield in East Lothian. The hotel speaks English, French, German, Italian, Polish and Spanish, keeps a playroom for children, though it declines bookings built around stag and hen parties and allows only registered guests in the rooms. A 50 GBP deposit is held per room per stay. This is not a hotel for anyone chasing polish for its own sake; the value is in a real address with a real name attached to it, softened by strong breakfasts and a whisky list built to be worked through slowly, night after night, for as long as the stay allows. A Georgian townhouse in Edinburgh's New Town, once home to essayist John Wilson (Christopher North), with 28 rooms, no lift, and a 25-whisky bar. It suits travellers after atmosphere and history over modern polish, not those who need step-free access or a party crowd.
