THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Prestonfield House Hotel
Twenty acres of gardens and parkland surround Prestonfield House, sheltering it from the city even though Edinburgh's Old Town is five minutes away and the center only three kilometres further. The house dates to 1687: the Tapestry Room still has its log fire, ancestral portraits and Mortlake tapestries, and the Whisky Room keeps a collection of antique equestrian prints for guests having a dram by the hearth. There are only 23 rooms across three floors, so service stays personal rather than processed, with bathrobes, minibars, DVD players and toiletries as standard rather than as a headline. Rhubarb Restaurant serves food every day from noon until 10pm, and there's a bar for the hours either side. What Prestonfield holds that most city hotels can't is the scale of its own grounds: guests can walk the gardens, book a massage, or play golf nearby, and free parking comes with EV charging and a valet who'll clean the car while you're out. Pets are welcome, which will matter more to some travellers than any amenity list. The private dining rooms, from the two-seat Salon Privee to the fifty-seat Garden Room, suit a family celebration or a small wedding better than a solo work trip, and anyone hoping for nightlife on the doorstep should look elsewhere in the Old Town instead. The Good Hotel Guide named it the best hotel in Scotland in 2025. Ask for a garden view room and those 20 acres stop being scenery and become the reason to stay. Twenty acres of private gardens keep Prestonfield House quiet in the middle of Edinburgh, in a house built in 1687 with fires, tapestries and only 23 rooms. Good for a family celebration, a golf trip, or a couple wanting seclusion; not for anyone chasing Old Town nightlife.

Originally the state bedchamber, the Leather Room takes its name from lavish gilded seventeenth-century leather panels imported from Cordoba and installed in 1687, recently restored. Now serving as a romantic drawing room, it offers guests an intimate, historic retreat for quiet drinks or conversation away from the main house.
