THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel San Regis
On a quiet street just off the Champs-Élysées, the entrance to Hotel San Regis gives away nothing: no marquee, no revolving glass door, just a discreet façade behind which travel specialists like Forbes Travel Guide and Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report have kept returning for years. The building started life as a private mansion in the 19th century, and the Georges family who own it have resisted turning it into a chain interior; each of the 42 rooms and suites across seven floors is furnished differently, with fabrics from established French houses and antique or period pieces rather than matching headboards. Breakfast and dinner happen under a glass roof in the restaurant and bar, and a small spa handles massage and has a doctor on call. This suits someone who wants central Paris, the Grand Palais and Avenue Montaigne boutiques a few minutes' walk away, and who would rather sleep in a room with its own decorating scheme than one that matches every floor above and below it. It will frustrate anyone who wants a hotel built for groups or large families: there are only 42 rooms, pets are not allowed, and an extra bed costs 90 EUR a night. Membership in Small Luxury Hotels of the World says something too: this is a house that stayed independent-minded even as it professionalized, holding Green Globe certification alongside the concierge desk and multilingual staff. Check in from 3pm, check out by noon, and a credit card on file at arrival, standard for a property this size. What San Regis has that its glossier neighbors mostly do not is a sense that somebody actually lived here first. A former private mansion in Paris's Golden Triangle, still family-owned and individually decorated room by room, with a glass-roofed restaurant and only 42 rooms in total. It rewards guests who want history and discretion over scale, though large groups and pet owners should look elsewhere.
