THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
L'Hotel
At 13 rue des Beaux-Arts on the Left Bank, a short walk from the Seine and the stalls of Marché rue de Buci in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, L'Hotel occupies the building where Oscar Wilde spent his final years. It is the hotel credited with starting the whole boutique category, and twenty rooms across four floors still bear that out: each one is decorated differently by designer Jacques Garcia, set off an extraordinary spiral staircase, with rich fabrics and its own colour story rather than a repeated template. What most boutique hotels this size skip is what sits below ground here, a hammam pool, steam room and treatment suite included in the room rate and given over privately during your booked appointment rather than shared with whoever else is downstairs that morning. Wilde's Lounge, the ground-floor cocktail bar named for the hotel's most famous resident, pours from 5pm to 1am daily and serves small plates Tuesday through Saturday; breakfast runs 7:30 to 10:30 and can be taken in the room instead of the lounge. Staff move between English, French, Italian, Russian and Spanish, and the practical side is covered too, concierge, laundry, dry cleaning, car rental, a library, and an airport transfer arranged for 180 euros both ways. Pets come along for a flat 30 euros a stay. This suits a traveller who wants a hotel with a literary past and an opinion about its own décor, not a branded lobby. It will not suit anyone chasing anonymity: with only twenty rooms, the front desk will know your face by the second morning, and the owners built it that way on purpose. Check-in is from 3pm, check-out by noon. L'Hotel occupies the Left Bank building where Oscar Wilde spent his final years, its twenty rooms each decorated differently by Jacques Garcia around a spiral staircase. Below ground, a private hammam pool and steam room come with the stay. That scale means the front desk learns your face fast.
