THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Monsieur George Hotel and Spa - Champs Elysees
On a quiet street off the Champs-Élysées, at the corner of rue Washington and rue Chateaubriand, Monsieur George occupies a Haussmannian townhouse that a British pioneer of the boutique-hotel concept turned from a plain building into something closer to a private house that happens to take guests. Forty-six rooms spread across six floors, and no two floors read the same: some rooms open onto balconies over the rooftops, others catch the Eiffel Tower from the bed, and a duplex suite on the garden level opens onto its own patio under a canopy of vines. Two white-washed rooms hide under the roof, and a suite higher up trades the usual rooftop view for one of Sacré-Cœur. Below all of it, in what used to be the building's vaulted cellars, the spa keeps its sauna walls in bare stone and its hammam tiled black and white, a setup that owes more to the house's history than to any spa catalogue. The restaurant sets its bistronomic lunches on a green zellige floor, and the bar's wall of antique mirrors tends to keep people talking past the hour they meant to leave. Staff work in six languages, pets are welcome for a flat per-stay fee, and connecting rooms mean families skip the two-key routine. This suits people who want walking distance to Galeries Lafayette and George V without the scale of a grand hotel, and who don't mind that their room won't match the one down the hall. It will not suit anyone who wants a guaranteed view locked in at booking. What stays with you is the cellar spa, built from what the building already had rather than bolted on afterward. Monsieur George turns a Haussmannian townhouse off the Champs-Élysées into forty-six rooms that never repeat themselves, from Eiffel Tower balconies to a cellar spa built into the building's old vaulted stone. It suits travellers who'd rather stay somewhere particular than somewhere predictable, not those chasing uniform luxury.
