THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Cortiina Hotel
Cortiina opened in Munich in 2001, when restaurateur Rudi Kull and architect Albert Weinzierl introduced the city to the idea of a boutique design hotel, five years after the same pair opened a French bistro in Munich. The 75 rooms, spread across six floors, still carry that founding brief: bog oak floors, Jura limestone in the bathrooms, burnished brass fittings, and furniture the architect designed himself, alongside pieces by Paris designer Eric Schmitt. Room design follows Feng Shui principles, mattresses are natural rubber tested in a sleep lab, bed linen is organic cotton, and guests pick their own pillow from a menu. The location does the rest of the work: Viktualienmarkt, Marienplatz, Isartor and the English Garden all sit within walking distance, useful for anyone who would rather skip the taxi receipts. What separates Cortiina from Munich's other design addresses is its wine bar, which carries an international award and runs as part of the restaurant's evening service rather than as a side attraction. Rooms range from a 14-square-metre Cosy single to a two-level Maisonette Suite with its own kitchen, so the fit shifts depending on whether the stay is one night or one week. A gym, free bicycle rental and nearby hiking routes suit guests who want to move, not those hoping for a pool or spa day, since neither appears among the hotel's listed amenities. Pets travel for a fee, an extra bed runs 80 euros a night, and staff switch comfortably between English, German, French and Russian. Cortiina isn't chasing the biggest name in the city. It's chasing the guest who remembers the mattress, the wine list and the short walk to the market square. A boutique hotel in central Munich built on bog oak, Jura stone and an award-winning wine bar, run by the same team since 2001. Its 75 rooms suit travelers who want mattress quality and a short walk to Viktualienmarkt more than a pool or full spa circuit.
