THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Narendra Bhawan Bikaner
At Narendra Bhawan Bikaner, dinner can open with a line from Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar, followed by a vichyssoise and caviar built to answer it. The Literally Literary menu pulls dishes from the personal library of Maharaja Narendra Singhji, whose eclectic, well-travelled taste still shapes every room of this 82-room heritage hotel, three kilometers from central Bikaner. Nothing here reads like a single-era restoration: rooms mix Art Deco lines with local craft, and dining spans six distinct kitchens, from the courtyard grills of Gaushala to Crescent Grill's Mughal repertoire to Mad Hatter's bake house. The Clinic, the hotel's spa, works from Bach Flower Therapy and Bemer microcirculation technology rather than the usual menu of massages, though massages, a sauna and a steam room are also on offer. Guests can book a Merchant Exploration, a guided walk through Bikaner's havelis and frescoed courtyards led by an in-house storyteller, ending at a Marwari Thali table, an outing few Rajasthan hotels stage as house programming. There's an indoor and an outdoor pool, a gym, a playroom for children, and pets under five kilograms travel for a surcharge. This suits travelers who want a hotel that argues a point about Bikaner rather than simply housing them near it, and who don't mind that the nearest major airport is Jodhpur, a considerable drive away. It won't suit anyone chasing quiet minimalism or fast turnarounds between sights; every room and menu here is built to be read, slowly. Junagarh Fort is a short drive away, close enough for an afternoon, far enough that no one rushes back for it. Narendra Bhawan pairs a Maharaja's personal library with dinner, moving guests from a Plath passage to vichyssoise across six house kitchens, then on to a Bach Flower Therapy spa and a guided Merchant Exploration through Bikaner's havelis. Better suited to slow travelers than quick city stops.

Your taste already has an address

Dishes drawn from Maharaja Narendra Singh ji's personal library turn literature into a multi-course meal. Sylvia Plath's vichyssoise, Moby-Dick's clam chowder and Virginia Woolf's lamb daube each open with a read passage before arriving reimagined on the plate, blending storytelling and cuisine into an evening that unfolds somewhere between dinner and a reading room.
Daily buffet breakfast is served from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM for a fee.
