Hotel Tugu Lombok
Hotel Tugu Lombok spreads all 36 rooms across a single floor of bungalows, suites and garden villas along the white sand of Sire Beach on Lombok's north-west coast, each one dressed in traditional Indonesian furnishings, hand carvings and antique doors sourced from the founder's own collection. That collection is the thing setting the property apart from other resorts on the island: Tugu Hotels was built by Indonesia's leading collector of fine art and cultural antiquities, and this outpost doubles as a working museum, with reclaimed temple structures and centuries-old pieces displayed through the public rooms rather than locked behind glass. The signature villa carries the idea furthest, its layout modelled on an ancient temple, with a private rooftop deck and a plunge pool of its own. Two open-air restaurants and a bar cover local and Western cooking, and the kitchen will set up a sunrise picnic, beach dinner or cooking class on request. Days can run toward the water: an outdoor pool, an indoor pool, a diving club and a stretch of coast facing Gili Islands, where snorkelling is close at hand, or toward Mount Rinjani and the Gangga waterfall for those who want the jungle side of Lombok instead. A spa, sauna, yoga area and library round out the quieter hours. Selaparang Airport is 30 kilometres away and Mataram's city centre another 35, so this suits travellers content to stay put rather than day-trip constantly. Couples sharing a room are asked to show a marriage certificate at check-in, a detail worth knowing, and pets are not permitted. What lingers after the trip is less the beach than the sense of having slept inside someone's lifelong collection. Thirty-six rooms, one floor, and a private collection of centuries-old Indonesian antiques set into a beachfront resort on Lombok's north-west coast. Good for slow travel, diving trips to the Gili Islands and couples ready to show a marriage certificate at check-in. Not for guests who want nightlife within walking distance.

Lara Djonggrang Bar occupies a traditional semi-open hut furnished with hundred-year-old thick wooden benches, a long teak bar, oil lamps and bamboo windows hung with artwork. The hotel describes it as chicly primitive, pairing a brick-walled wine cellar with traditional daytime music and lounge sounds in the evening.
