THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel D'Angleterre
At the edge of Lac Léman, with the Jet d'Eau visible above the water and Mont Blanc beyond, Hotel D'Angleterre has occupied the same spot since 1872, its facade the work of architect Anthony Krafft and still enough of a landmark that Genevans point to it first. It is part of the family-run Red Carnation Hotel Collection, one of the earliest hotels the city ever had, and by its own account the only true luxury boutique hotel Geneva has left; with 45 rooms spread across four floors, it never tries to compete on volume with the convention-scale hotels nearby, and that restraint is the point. Rooms are individually styled with art and marble-lined bathrooms, some with an indoor fireplace, all soundproofed; a Classic Double runs 248 square feet while a Standard Suite reaches 753, so the room chosen changes the stay considerably. Downstairs, Le 17 restaurant serves seasonal, grill-led menus with lake views, the Leopard Bar draws crowds for live music most nights, and a dedicated cigar lounge stocks Cohibas for guests who want one. General Manager Jérémie Laurent runs a staff fluent in six languages, including a concierge who stayed at the desk for 42 years, long enough to remember guests' names without checking. Families get a playroom and babysitting on request, pets are welcome for a nightly fee, and a doctor is on call. It sits a walkable kilometre from the Flower Clock and the English Garden, close enough to skip a taxi. None of this suits anyone wanting a big resort with a pool deck and a busy lobby; this is a small, particular hotel, and it knows exactly what it is. Hotel D'Angleterre has held its spot on Lac Léman since 1872, one of Red Carnation's boutique addresses with just 45 rooms and Jet d'Eau views. Expect marble bathrooms and a concierge who stayed 42 years. Skip it for a resort with a pool deck.
