THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Armures Hotel
Rue du Puits-Saint-Pierre is one of the narrow, cobbled lanes threading Geneva's Old Town, and Hôtel Les Armures has stood on it since the 17th century, close enough to Saint-Pierre Cathedral that guests can walk to it before breakfast is even served. The building itself is the point: 32 rooms across four floors, no two of them alike, set inside a house built in the 1600s. Downstairs, the restaurant serves the kind of Swiss cooking that international dining rooms tend to skip, émincé de veau à la zürichoise, grilled St. Gallen schubling, and a half-and-half fondue of Vacherin and Gruyère with a Valais plate on the side, and there is a wine bar for the evening after. A steam room and spa sit alongside a small fitness area, and a business center and conference hall handle anything more formal. Staff move between English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Arabic and Chinese without missing a beat, and pets are allowed, which is not a given at this level in Geneva. What sets it apart from Geneva's larger, newer luxury hotels is simple: this is a genuine historic house, not a modern build dressed in period detail, and its Junior Suite has drawn enough discreet regulars that the hotel doesn't advertise who they are. It suits someone who wants to be inside the old city, not parked near it with a view of the lake instead. It will not suit anyone wanting a large pool, a spa day as the main event, or a room bigger than 40 square meters. Book it for the address, and the age of the walls will do the rest. A 17th-century house on a cobbled lane in Geneva's Old Town, near Saint-Pierre Cathedral, with 32 rooms, a Swiss-specialties restaurant, a wine bar, and a spa. It suits travelers who want to sleep inside the historic center, not those chasing a lake view or a large pool.
