THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Knightsbridge Hotel
Three minutes on foot from Harrods, behind a Knightsbridge townhouse built in 2002, forty-four rooms sit across six floors, and several come with an actual fireplace built into the wall, a detail no lobby scene or rooftop bar in the neighbourhood can match. Each room is individually decorated, with a minibar, flat-screen TV, and designer toiletries as standard, and downstairs a library serves as the quiet room most hotels forget to keep. The Victoria and Albert Museum sits 0.4 miles away, the Natural History Museum 0.6, and Hyde Park nine minutes on foot, so most days here run on foot rather than by taxi. Staff move between English, French, German, Italian, Polish and Spanish without missing a beat, which matters more than any welcome drink to someone arriving straight off a flight. This suits the woman who wants a front door that isn't clogged with luggage trolleys, who would rather read in a library than queue at a rooftop bar, and who books breakfast separately because she'd rather choose her own café most mornings. It suits less the family filling two rooms for a week: the smallest rooms run under 120 square feet, pets aren't allowed, and there's a £150 deposit plus a £60 nightly charge for any extra bed, numbers worth knowing before you book. What Firmdale has built here, as across the ten other hotels in a collection Tim and Kit Kemp started in 1985, is a house that behaves like a house, not a hotel behaving like a stage set. Ask for the room with the fireplace lit in October, and you'll understand why regulars don't bother booking anything bigger. A 44-room Knightsbridge townhouse three minutes from Harrods, with fireplaces in several rooms and a staff fluent in six languages. Better suited to a long weekend of museums and shopping than a family week; breakfast and any extra bed cost extra. Ask for the fireplace room in October.
