THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Ampersand Hotel London, Small Luxury Hotels of the World
In a restored Victorian building in South Kensington, The Ampersand Hotel serves an afternoon tea it calls Jurassic: dinosaur biscuits for the children's version, fruity cocktails for the grown-up one, and a claim the hotel makes that the idea is one of a kind and unique to itself. That single detail tells you more about the place than a list of facilities could. Its 111 rooms are grouped by theme rather than size alone: ornithological design and floor-to-ceiling windows in the Deluxe Rooms, botanical references in the residential-scale Deluxe Studios, a geometry-inspired look and skyline views in the Suites, astronomy motifs in the intimate Singles and Small Doubles, and enormous velvet headboards in the music-inspired Superior Rooms. Downstairs, Apero sits beneath the hotel's Victorian cellar arches, white metro tiles and exposed brick, while the Drawing Rooms pair scarlet velvet with kingfisher blue for a more formal hour, French finesse meeting British style. South Kensington tube station is across the street, and the V&A, the Natural History Museum, Hyde Park and Harrods are all within easy reach, along with the Wildlife Garden and St. Augustine's Church nearby. There's a gym, a business center, a library that also works as an event space, and a ping pong table for anyone not in meetings. Dogs are welcome, children get a playroom and their own party menu, and staff converse in seven languages. This is not the address for someone chasing minimalist calm; the dinosaur tea and the games room push playful over restrained. It suits someone who wants a proper museum-district base with its sense of humor intact. Check-in runs from 2pm, checkout by noon, and nearby parking costs 52 GBP a day. A restored Victorian hotel in South Kensington with individually themed rooms and a Jurassic afternoon tea unique to the property. Steps from the tube, the V&A and Hyde Park, with a gym, library and pet-friendly rooms. Built for playful travelers, not minimalists.
