THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Berkeley London Hotel
On a clear morning, guests staying in one of The Berkeley's terrace suites can step outside onto a private terrace that looks toward Hyde Park, the kind of outdoor space few London hotel rooms genuinely offer. The hotel sits between Belgravia and Knightsbridge, two kilometres from central London and within walking distance of Hyde Park Corner, The Park Tower Casino and the Australian War Memorial. Its 169 rooms, spread across eight floors, run from compact doubles to suites over a thousand square feet, several with balconies or terraces of their own. What separates it from the rest of Knightsbridge's luxury hotel row is Cedric Grolet, the pâtissier-in-residence whose counter here, his first patisserie outside France, offers what the hotel calls a globally exclusive dining experience. Beyond that, the hotel carries a heated rooftop pool with views over Knightsbridge and Hyde Park, an indoor pool, a spa with sauna and steam room, a gym and yoga space, a business centre for anyone folding work into the trip, and a playroom and babysitting for anyone travelling with children. Staff speak several languages between them, from French and Italian to Russian and Turkish, useful for a clientele that rarely all arrives from the same country. None of this suits someone hunting for a boutique with edge or a bargain rate; a 150 GBP nightly deposit on arrival tells its own story about the kind of stay this is. But for a traveller who wants Knightsbridge luxury without compromise, a terrace, a pool, a pastry counter worth crossing a continent for, few addresses in the city deliver it with this certainty. The Berkeley sits between Belgravia and Knightsbridge, its terrace suites looking toward Hyde Park and its rooftop pool above the city. Cedric Grolet's counter here, his first outside France, is the one thing no other Knightsbridge address can offer.
