THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Vintry & Mercer Hotel
Vintry & Mercer takes its name from the wine and silk trading guilds that once governed this stretch of the City of London, set among the historic livery halls and winding lanes of the district, and the building plays on that history at every turn: bespoke fabrics echo patterns worn by merchant tailors, old navigation maps and photographs line the walls, and growing plants sit against sharp, contemporary lines. St Paul's Cathedral and London Bridge are both within walking distance, and Mansion House tube station sits close by, putting the rest of the city within easy reach. In the evenings, Mercer Roof Terrace opens onto the skyline for dinner, while DND, built as a prohibition-era speakeasy, is the sort of clandestine encounter not found behind most upscale hotel lobby doors. All 92 rooms are individually decorated, with espresso makers, LED televisions, laptop-compatible safes and desks, and the room list runs heavily toward single-occupancy categories, Deluxe Single, Superior Single, Standard Single, alongside king and queen rooms, a spread that reads more business traveller than family holiday. There is a gym, a library, a business centre, and a concierge desk that also handles laundry and dry cleaning; wheelchair access extends to the restaurant. Pets are not allowed. Continental breakfast is not included and runs to GBP 16 a head, served from 6:30am on weekdays and a little later at weekends. As part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, it operates independently rather than to a chain formula, and nowhere else carries its combination: a name borrowed from historic City trading guilds, and a bar, DND, built as a prohibition-era hideout behind it. Named after London's old wine and silk trading guilds, Vintry & Mercer pairs merchant-tailor fabrics and historic maps with DND, a prohibition-style speakeasy few neighbouring hotels can match. Its 92 rooms lean single-occupancy, better suited to a business trip than a family holiday.
