THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Montage Kapalua Bay
Montage Kapalua Bay sits next to the beach at Kapalua on Maui, its 70 rooms spread across seven floors built in 2009, with the Kapalua Coastal Trail and Kapalua Beach close enough to reach on foot. Every room here starts as a one-bedroom suite, and roughly half the room types run to two or three bedrooms with ocean or garden views, so the resort suits families and groups wanting real space more than a traveller after one quiet room to disappear into. What separates it from the other resorts along this coast is Spa Montage, a 30,000-square-foot building designed as two spas in one, indoor and outdoor, built around Hawaiian materials and plants rather than a standard treatment menu. Days can move between the outdoor pool and spa tub, a morning of diving, snorkelling or windsurfing arranged through the concierge, or the fitness facilities, while a kids' club, playroom and children's pool keep younger guests occupied without anyone negotiating a compromise trip. Tennis, golf and hiking trails round out the amenities list. Staff work in English, Spanish, Italian, German and Portuguese. Rooms are finished with bathrobes, slippers and soundproofing, plain comforts rather than showy ones. This is not the place for anyone chasing nightlife on the doorstep or a small property where the staff learn your name by the second morning; it works better for people who want a serious spa, room to spread out, and a beach that does not require a shuttle to reach. Check-in runs from 4pm, checkout by 11am, and an extra bed costs 100 dollars a night depending on room category. The bay itself does most of the convincing. Montage Kapalua Bay pairs 70 rooms of mostly multi-bedroom suites and villas with a 30,000-square-foot spa built as two spaces, indoor and outdoor, unlike anything else on this stretch of Maui coast. Families and groups get room to spread out; solo travellers wanting boutique intimacy should look elsewhere.
