Whiteface Lodge
Check-in is at 4pm, and by then most guests have already spent the day inside Adirondack Park, six million acres of protected wilderness that wrap around this timber lodge like nothing else near Lake Placid can claim. Whiteface Lodge borrows its bones from the region's Gilded Age hunting camps: hand-hewn log beams, granite fireplaces, ninety-six rooms across four floors, many with their own fireplace and a working kitchen. The village that hosted two Winter Olympic Games is a short walk away, but the pull here is staying put. There's an indoor pool and an outdoor one, a private beach, ski storage for winter, a golf course and hiking trails for the rest of the year, plus bowling, ping-pong, and a fitness center that don't ask much of the calendar. The Spa at Whiteface Lodge, ranked among the Top 100 Spas in North America by Condé Nast Traveler, is the one credential few Adirondack properties can match, and it books out, so treatments need arranging before arrival. Kanu handles the formal dinners under its open kitchen; Peak 47's copper bar, wood-burning fireplace, and award-winning wine list cover the rest. Families get a playroom, babysitting, and suites large enough for a stroller and a stopover; a solo traveler chasing a downtown buzz or a stripped-back boutique room will find the property's scale and its resort fee working against her. Pets aren't allowed, which simplifies things for guests who care. What lingers isn't the timber or the mountain views, both plentiful nearby, but the fact that after a full day outside, there's a proper spa waiting that doesn't feel like an afterthought. Whiteface Lodge sits inside six million acres of Adirondack Park, a short walk from the village that twice hosted the Winter Olympics. Its 96 rooms pair fireplaces and kitchens with a spa ranked among North America's Top 100, better suited to families and outdoor types than downtown seekers.

Whiteface Lodge is built in the timber style of the Adirondacks' historic Gilded Age Great Camps, tucked into wooded High Peaks scenery near Lake Placid. Hand-hewn beams, stone fireplaces and rustic detailing throughout the property echo the grandeur of the original camps, giving the resort a distinctive mountain-lodge character within walking distance of the village.
Ski storage is provided for winter sports equipment.
Babysitting and childcare services can be arranged on request.
A full-service spa includes sauna and steam room facilities.
The front desk operates around the clock.
