THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm
Lavender fields stretch toward the Sandia Mountains at Los Poblanos, a 25-acre organic farm on the edge of Albuquerque, seven kilometers from downtown, where John Gaw Meem's 1932 architecture still frames the courtyards guests cross today. The Rembe family has run the place for three generations, and that continuity shows in details a corporate group could never replicate: produce from the farm's own fields lands on the plate at Campo, the on-site restaurant named among the top ten hotels for food and drink by Food & Wine, and the botanical gin distilled here turns up in the cocktail list. Forty-five rooms spread across a single floor mean no elevators, no long corridors, just a short walk from the door to the lavender rows or the outdoor pool. The Hacienda Spa builds seasonal treatments around what's harvested that week, a specificity most hotel spas don't bother with. A fitness center, wheelchair-accessible restaurant, concierge and tour desk cover the practical ground, and free self-parking removes one more errand from the day. Nearby, Los Poblanos Open Space and Casa Rondeña give walkers somewhere to go without a car. This suits travelers who want New Mexico's agricultural history folded into their stay, not those chasing a rooftop bar or a downtown address; the seven-kilometer drive into Albuquerque is unavoidable. What Los Poblanos has that its competitors don't is the working farm itself, 25 acres of it, still shaping the kitchen, the spa and the grounds in equal measure. Check in at four, and the lavender is already doing its work by five. A 25-acre working farm outside Albuquerque, run by the same family for three generations, with a Food & Wine top-ten restaurant fed straight from its own fields. Forty-five rooms, one floor, lavender rows instead of a downtown skyline, not for anyone wanting the city center.
