THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Betsy South Beach
At the quiet north end of Ocean Drive, past the point where the strip's noise thins into surf, a 1942 Florida-Georgian building holds an orb-shaped skybridge and a poetry rail of water-carved steel, the kind of architectural quirks locals point out to visitors who ask directions. The Betsy South Beach is five floors and sixty-one rooms, family-run in a stretch of Miami Beach usually associated with towers and turnover, and it shows in small ways: staff who remember names, a library built into every guest room, book talks and gallery exhibits that go on regardless of who's booked upstairs. Two pools, one on the roof and one indoors, sit alongside private beach service, and the resort fee covers two beach towels, chairs and an umbrella as well as newspaper delivery. Chef Laurent Tourondel, who built the BLT Steak group and earned three stars from The New York Times for Cello, runs LT Steak & Seafood here, and the Piano Bar hosts live jazz seven nights a week. That scale won't suit someone who wants a thousand-room resort with anonymity built in, or a guest chasing the party scene further down Ocean Drive; this crowd tends to read on the balcony instead of queuing at a rooftop bar. Pets under five kilograms are welcome for a surcharge, handy for travellers who don't leave the dog behind. Two Michelin Key Awards set it apart from South Beach's other boutique hotels, but what stays with guests is simpler: a building old enough to carry its own architectural history, still lively enough to host jazz on a Tuesday night. A 1942 Florida-Georgian building at the quiet end of Ocean Drive, family-run, with a library in every room and live jazz nightly. Two pools, private beach service, and Chef Laurent Tourondel's LT Steak & Seafood. Suits readers more than partygoers; small dogs welcome for a fee.

Chef Laurent Tourondel, whose career spans BLT Steak, Cello and Relais & Chateau kitchens in France, opened LT Steak & Seafood and The Alley at The Betsy in 2016. His signature gougères behind the popovers open every meal, reflecting a coastal-France upbringing that still shapes the menu today.
