THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Fauchere
Louis Fauchère arrived in Milford in 1852 having cooked at Delmonico's in New York, and by the late 1870s he had built the Italianate house that still anchors downtown Milford, run by his descendants for 124 years before it closed in 1976. Reopened today as a sixteen-room hotel across four floors, it now carries a Relais & Chateaux membership, and the founder's split identity, Swiss-born, French-speaking, still echoes in the two dining rooms, the formal Delmonico Room and the more relaxed Bar Louis next door. Rooms run small and specific rather than generic: a 161-square-foot Small Double, a 194-square-foot Superior Queen, up to a 388-square-foot suite, with marble bathrooms and Frette linens in the higher categories. The location does real work too. The Columns Museum, the Upper Mill, and Grey Towers National Historic Site are all within walking distance, and hikers, cyclists, and anglers headed into the Poconos can start from the door rather than a parking lot. A garden and terrace give guests somewhere to sit outdoors that isn't a hallway, and a library and picnic area suit the slower half of a stay. Weddings and small meetings are handled on site, with a conference hall and a staff that works across five languages. Pets are welcome for a flat $75 fee. None of this is resort scale, and anyone wanting a large pool deck, a kids' club, or dozens of room types should look elsewhere. What's on offer instead is a single historic house that has kept its own name and its own kitchen for over 170 years, and still runs like it. A sixteen-room Relais & Chateaux hotel built in the 1870s by a Swiss-born, French-speaking chef who once cooked at Delmonico's, a walk from Grey Towers and the Columns Museum. Suits a slow Poconos weekend of hiking and long dinners, not anyone chasing resort scale.
